Golf Green Construction Using Perlite as an Amendment

The following table lists the USGA specifications for green mixtures. An examination of Figure 1 shows that the golf green mixtures using medium sands and perlite best fit the USGA specifications.

Bulk Density	1.20--1.60 g/cm³
Porosity: Total Noncapillary	40-55% 15% or more
Water Retention	12-25%, by weight
Infiltration Rate	2-10 inches/hour
Silt Content	5% or less
Clay Content	3% or less
